High Levels of Juice Extraction, 2 Nov 2011
By S. Thomas
This review is from : Philips Avance HR1871 Whole Fruit Juicer with XXL Tube, 800 Watt (Kitchen & Home)

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)

This juicer offers the highest level of juice extraction I have ever come across, whether from a stand-alone juicer, the citrus attachment for my Kenwood Chef or a manual press. There is very little juice that escapes and therefore very little waste.

* Assembly

The juicer comes in a very large box, which will be too big for most kitchens to accommodate for storage. The juicer does, however have a relatively small footprint on a work surface and also looks good, so mine is staying out ready for action.

I found it very easy to put the juicer together without needing to refer constantly to the instructions as everything assembled in a very logical fashion. Taking it apart subsequently for cleaning is also a doddle.

* Method

You need to do some preparation of the fruit before starting to juice. Remove anything from the fruit that you wouldn't normally eat - so peel oranges and pineapples, remove the stones from apricots and so on; apples on the other hand are just popped in whole.

The insertion tube will take apples and oranges in one piece but pineapples need to be cut down in size to fit, as does any other large fruit. Whilst fruit preparation is not high on my list of must-do jobs, it is worth taking the time to do this properly to avoid any bitterness creeping into the taste of the resultant juice. Once peeled and cut as necessary, the fruit is just inserted into the tube and pushed down slowly.

You get a choice of two different juicing speeds; the slower one works best on soft fruit like oranges and the faster one on harder produce like apples. I flit between the two speeds for pineapples depending on how much of the core is present in each piece. The juice is collected into the supplied jug or you can place a glass directly under the spout if preferred. Simple.

* Noise

There is no getting away from the fact that extracting juice from fruit is a noisy business. It seems slightly noisier than other juicers I have used in the past but not disproportionately so; except I do have to ensure the cats are not in the kitchen when it is in operation as they do not like it.

* Results

As I said at the start, this juicer really does produce more juice from each fruit than I have ever experienced previously. The pulp container contained only a dry mass when I juiced oranges and apples; there was literally no juice visible in there at all. The waste from pineapples is slightly wetter but comparably dry to what I have seen before. There is also less foam generated from the process, so the juice is much clearer as well.

* Mess

There isn't any!

The spout from the juicer incorporates an inner lip that cuts off the flow of juice when the spout is twisted. This helps to ensure nothing drips onto your work surface or down the front of the machine when the jug/glass is removed.

All of the waste from the fruit is collected into a pulp collector that sits under the sieve; this is easily emptied into your normal food waste once juicing is completed. The pulp container is part of the main juicer assembly and easily has the capacity to collect the pulp from a dozen oranges or a couple of pineapples before it needs to be emptied.

* Cleaning

Philips have really made sure that cleaning is not off putting, everything can just be rinsed under the tap before being dried and reassembled. All removable parts can be placed in a dishwasher but I really don't find that necessary as it is so easy to wash by hand, even the sieve comes up like new using a plastic washing up brush under the tap.

* Summary

It is an efficient juicer that really does seem to maximise the amount of juice than is extracted from each piece of fruit. It is easy to clean so there is nothing to put you off from using it on a daily basis to produce really fresh juice - and that juice tastes so much better than anything you can buy in a shop.

I bought this juicer with the aim of it helping me fulfill a NY resolution to reduce the amount of fruit and veg i throw out and to improve my diet and overall well being ( i suffer from depression and anxiety and go through phases of over eating or not eating so the aim of a good diet is a must:-) ) .

So far i have achieved the original aim and the juicer is in action every other day making light work of anything thats put in it. The book that comes along with it by Jason Vale is a good inspiration and i have already been experimenting with my own simple recipes. The first juice of the day is a real pick me up, filling and refreshing and maybe just maybe i might try the detox programme ......

The juicer itself is simple in design and easy to dismantle to clean & reassemble and only the sections it uses get dirty . Its quiet and efficient and there is something quite fascinating about watching it make light work of fruit and dispensing a refreshing juice.

I have no criticisms of this product however my words of advice based on experience to any other prospective users are the following -
1) If making a load of juices for a couple of days , buy some decent screw top containers as juices settle in fridge so need a good shake before consumption.

2) Be organised on your kitchen space and do a load of juicing at once to make most of the machine - if you dont have a dishwasher like me , make sure you keep the sink clear so you can clean the machine immediately after use - its just good discipline and a lot easier.

3) Invest in a small silicon spatula as this is great for scooping out the dry pulp out of the efficient collector rather than using your hands.

4) Citrus fruits do need peeled as they leave a bitter taste but a good knife makes depeeling a pleasure. If you do juice with peel on try mixing a little honey in resulting juice to placate the bitterness depending on your taste.

5) Alot of the recipes use fresh slice of pineapple which isnt always the feasible - i found that decent tinned pineapple slices worked just as well :-)

I hope the review will help any other prospective buyers as the other reviews on Amazon site helped me - its a great product and well worth the investment . Happy juicing.

This juicer replaced my old Philips wide chute juicer which I've had for 6 years. Recently I noticed that the pulp was more moist and felt that I wasn't getting the best results so was considering replacing it when I came across the new Avance from Philips. I've had it a couple of weeks now and must say I'm delighted with it. Main points are that the pulp is incredibly dry so obviously I'm getting maximum juice, the spout turns 90' so no drips when youve finished juicing, there a handy second spout so you can juice directly into a glass and cleaning up is much faster than the old juicer,as the shape has no nooks or crannies for pulp to get stuck in.
Would definitely recommended this juicer I use it everyday and next week I'm doing a 7 day juice only detox/diet along with the Juicemaster and 10,000 others! That will certainly give my new kitchen appliance a good work out!

I purchased the Phillips Avance Hr1871 whole fruit juicer because I wanted juicing not to be a chore and time consuming. With this juicer it certainly is not. So lovely and quick, the whole family use it. Easy to clean either in the dishwasher or by hand, and you can towel dry it keeping it nice and shiny and a pleasure to look at. Juicing whole apples, and larger pieces of fruit certainly cuts down the time of chopping all the fruit up. I liquidize spinach, and avocado etc using the using jug. The whole machine is a pleasure to use. I registered the purchase on line as I had read that some people had their machines burn out within six months to cover any problems which I do not expect to have.

This is a great design and works very well, and if you are a regular juicer is well worth the investment. It seems to get a great deal of juice from anything you put in it, and best of all is really quite simple to clean. Really, a rinse will do it, if you do it straight away, since there is NO grease.
One word of WARNING. It stopped working in the middle of making a juice of the normal ingredients, and I was about to return it as faulty, when I noticed there is a button hidden on the bottom which is a reset, for when it has cut out to save the motor if there is a strain on it. It now works fine! I didn't notice this in the instructions, and I wonder whether the problems that Amazon have reported customers having, is the same one as I had, and that all they need to do is press the button, not send it back!! Anyway, all in all, a very good machine that makes tasty drinks from nearly anything!

You have juicers then you have this...

I simply love this, i was in 2 minds for a while about using a juicer like this simply because of the fact alot of gadgets i get for the kitchen get used once or twice a year and never realy touched.

Im a big fan of fruit, especially apples, but i sometimes go overboard on buying them, sometimes 3-4 bags of apples a week and i tend to have a few knocking about. So this realy comes in handy to destroy the left over apples and convert them to the lovely apple juice i drink too much off!.

Now putting this together is a doddle, its extremely well built and it feels and looks like you know where your cash is going. Takes less than a minute or so to get it together and ready to rock. You can fit a few apples in the top feeding tube at once or just one at a time. The fruit will be "juiced" or realy to be honest destroyed! in a second. The pulp is collected inside the unit and kept in a pulp ring. I used a few apples, maybe 4 or 5 and got a few glasses of juice (small glasses).

The washing of it takes more than 2 minutes i have to admit, its not hard to clean but just takes longer than they say.

I know this has a big price tag but i have to admit if your gonna use it often, its the best out there and worth the cash...

Having owned the Philips HR1861 and loved it, I was definitely up for an upgrade when I realised just how much use I was getting from it and how many bin bags I was going through using them in the pulp bin. Watching the video's and reading reviews from Jason Vale's site and Amazon of course, I decided that the Avance HR1871 was to be my new gadget.
Soooo glad I bought it!
With the more powerful motor it produces more juice leaving drier pulp, saving us money on our fruits and veggies, and also leaving less of a sticky mess at the bottom of the bin when we forget to empty it as often as needed. :-S
Cleaning is an absolute doddle. I was fortunate enough to have kept hold of the little scrubbing brush that came with our previous juicer, this one for some reason doesn't come with one. But get yourself a relatively short bristled dish brush and you'll be scrubbing the blades clean in no time. I say scrubbing, but they really only need a good rinse before drying off and reassembling.
I've read reviews about the motor on this model burning out with heavy use, but quite frankly we have used ours pretty much every day for 4 months, often making 8 juices a day and we've yet to smell smoke or see flames! (I'm hoping writing that isn't going to jinx my good fortune!) lol but seriously if at this point 4 months on it decided to blow up, we've saved that much money cutting out processed foods and juicing I'd buy the same model again and again.

Philips are quite simply the best manufacturers of juicers. I am a very happy juicing customer indeed!

This juicer creates great juice. It is easy to use and very easy to clean. They claim cleaning in 1 minute which is a bit optomistic but I have used it for about 10 juicing sessions now and on each one it hasn't taken more than 2 mins to properly clean so that makes this juicer viable for a quick juice for one without a long clean up job.

The waste pulp is remarkably dry which indicates that most of the available juice is being squeezed out. Remarkable.

We prepared though... it sounds a bit like a jet engine but to be honest it isn't that loud so it is not a problem. It is just a bit of a surprise when you first use it.

This, combined with the Avance Blender, makes the perfect juicing set up.

My only concern is that I have read that some people have had the motor break so will mine last with regular, daily use? I don't know but it is looking good so far.

  1. Had the Philips HR1861 and glad I kept it, got the Philips Avance HR1871 before the summer and use it daily, fantastic juicer but 3 or 4 weeks ago the feed chute broke at the bottom, checked the forums and seems that this is not a common occurrence, waiting for Argos to get in a replacement and in the meantime ive reverted back to using my trusty HR1861
